Plotting inequalities on a number line

Draw open or closed endpoints and shade the correct part of a number line.

  • Use an open circle for or . Use a closed circle for or .
  • Greater values go to the right; smaller values go to the left.
  • For a bounded interval, join the two endpoints and check each endpoint separately.

Example 1

Include the endpoint

Represent .

Values above 7. 7 included.

Example 2

A bounded interval

Represent .

Values between -1 and 5. -1 included, 5 excluded.

Your turn
