Reading values from a box plot
Reading values from a box plot.
- Mark the minimum, Q₁, median, Q₃ and maximum on one consistent scale.
- The box shows the middle 50%; the whiskers reach the extremes.
- Compare medians for typical value and IQRs for spread.
Example 1
Read the five summary values, then find the range and IQR.
Range Subtract the minimum from the maximum.
Minimum 2, Q₁ 5, median 8, Q₃ 12, maximum 17.
Example 2
Read the five summary values, then find the range and IQR.
Range Subtract the minimum from the maximum.
Minimum 3, Q₁ 6, median 9, Q₃ 13, maximum 18.
