Dividing by a decimal

Make a decimal divisor into a whole number.

  • Multiply both numbers by the same power of ten.
  • Choose the power that makes the divisor a whole number.
  • The quotient stays the same because both numbers scale equally.

Example 1

Calculate.

(6.72) over (0.8)=(67.2) over (8). From fraction 1 to fraction 2, times 10 for both numerator and denominator.

Multiply both numbers by the same power of ten to make the divisor a whole number.

Example 2

Calculate.

(9.45) over (1.5)=(94.5) over (15). From fraction 1 to fraction 2, times 10 for both numerator and denominator.

Multiply both numbers by the same power of ten to make the divisor a whole number.

Remember
The quotient stays the same because both numbers scale equally.
