NumberKey Stage 3

Equivalent fractions

Make a fraction with the same value using a different numerator and denominator.

  • Multiply or divide the numerator and denominator by the same non-zero number.
  • The size of each part changes, but the total proportion stays the same.
  • Use the whole chain when missing numbers occur in more than one fraction.

Example 1

Find one missing number

Complete the equivalent fraction.

(2) over (3)=( blank ) over (15). From fraction 1 to fraction 2, times 5 for both numerator and denominator.

Example 2

A chain of three fractions

Find the missing values of and .

(30) over (40)=(b) over (8)=(18) over (a). From fraction 1 to fraction 2, divided by 5 for both numerator and denominator. From fraction 2 to fraction 3, times 3 for both numerator and denominator.
Simplify the numerical terms and collect like terms.

Remember
Whatever you do to the numerator, do the same to the denominator.

Your turn
