Checking a ratio allocation against a total
There are two checks: the shares must add to the total and must have the stated ratio.
- There are two checks: the shares must add to the total and must have the stated ratio.
- Divide each share by its matching ratio number. All values of one part must agree.
- A correct total on its own does not prove that the allocation is correct.
Example 1
£15 should be shared in the ratio 2 : 3. A pupil allocates £6 and £9, in that order. Is this correct?
Example 2
£28 should be shared in the ratio 3 : 4. A pupil allocates £13 and £15, in that order. Is this correct?
Remember
Use the worked steps to check your method, not just the final answer.
Your turn
£45 should be shared in the ratio 4 : 5. A pupil allocates £20 and £25, in that order. Is this correct?
Check answer
The total is correct and both shares use the same value of one part.
£66 should be shared in the ratio 5 : 6. A pupil allocates £31 and £35, in that order. Is this correct?
Check answer
The total is correct, but the two values of one part are different.
£91 should be shared in the ratio 6 : 7. A pupil allocates £42 and £49, in that order. Is this correct?
Check answer
The total is correct and both shares use the same value of one part.
£45 should be shared in the ratio 7 : 8. A pupil allocates £22 and £23, in that order. Is this correct?
Check answer
The total is correct, but the two values of one part are different.
£68 should be shared in the ratio 8 : 9. A pupil allocates £32 and £36, in that order. Is this correct?
